Haiti will see Tropical Storm GABRIELLE soon

HaitiAction.net - Port au Prince, Haiti — A slow moving weather system, about 300 miles southwest of Santo Domingo — the capital of the Dominican Republic — is wandering through the Eastern Caribbean threatening to sit in the region for a couple days. The National Hurricane Center in Miami (NHC) just released the first advisory for this system — still classified as a tropical depression 07L — at 5PM Haiti Time. We’re expecting the storm to reach sustained “tropical storm intensity” and become the seventh named storm overnight. As usual, HaitiAction.net is calling a storm before it’s “official.”

The NHC reported at 8pm AST that the forward progress of the storm has slowed to 2mph but they’re expecting that speed to pick up soon. The NHC also expects the storm to reach tropical storm intensity soon but is currently showing that it unlikely that GABRIELLE will reach “hurricane” intensity over the next five days. On the other hand if GABRIELLE does flummox the forecasters and “spin in place” for the next 12 hours that expectation will be modified.

The relatively quiet 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season is about to change. Over the last few weeks a steady flow of tropical waves has kept the island saturated so that the arrival of Tropical Storm GABRIELLE is sure to overload the runoff in the mountainous regions, dangerous mudslides and flash floods are almost guaranteed within a couple of days; as much as ten inches of rainfall can be expected. The center of the storm is forecast to move north through the Mona Passage but some computer models still show that is is just as likely that GABRIELLE will hit Port au Prince Friday afternoon.

Most forecast models are weighing towards the overwhelming effects of a mid-latitude trough off the EAST Coast of the USA. However the three Beta and Advection Models — BAMS, BAMM & BAMD are weighted to most every other influence on the storm track (in the vicinity) other than that trough (a thousand miles away). What that means is that Haiti should issue its own Tropical Storm Watch — a “Watch” means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area within the next 12 to 24 hours — and not wait for for the NHC. The next twelve hours will be critical
